Itinerary

Depart from Malang/Surabaya in the afternoon. Scenic drive through East Java countryside. Check-in at hotel in Cemoro Lawang with views of the caldera. Dinner and early rest — big day tomorrow!

Wake up at 3 AM. 4WD jeep to Penanjakan viewpoint. Watch the spectacular sunrise as Bromo's crater smokes below. Jeep back down to the Sea of Sand. Trek across the ash plain to the crater base (about 2 km). Climb 253 steps to the crater rim and peer into the active vent. Return to hotel, freshen up. Drive back to Malang/Surabaya or continue to your next destination.

Good to Know

Wear warm layers — it can be 0–5°C at the viewpoint before sunrise. The hike across the Sand Sea to the crater is flat but dusty. Horses are available to rent if you prefer not to walk. Photography is best in the first hour after sunrise.
