Mount Bromo
Sunrise above the sea of sand
Travel Guide
The most spectacular experience is watching the sunrise from Penanjakan viewpoint, where you'll see Bromo's smoking crater against a backdrop of the higher Mount Semeru. The views are utterly surreal — a moonscape of volcanic ash, steaming craters, and when the clouds part, an infinite sky ablaze with colour.
After watching the sunrise, you'll descend to the crater floor and trek up 253 steps to peer into Bromo's active crater. The sulfuric smoke, rumbling sounds, and sheer scale make this an unforgettable, almost meditative experience.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Mount Bromo is during the dry season (May–October), particularly June and July for clear sunrise views. Avoid December–January (rainy season) as clouds often obscure the view. Early morning visits (3–5 AM) are essential to catch the famous sunrise.
